We are looking for a well-qualified Director of Accounting for one of our non-profit clients in Manhattan who will oversee the daily accounting operations and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting. This position is temp to hire (after 90 days) and fully onsite. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills in general ledger management, month-end close, and financial statement preparation. The Director will play a key role in strengthening accounting processes, supporting compliance, and partnering with program and leadership teams to maintain financial integrity.


Key Responsibilities

General Ledger & Month-End Close

  • Manage all general ledger activities, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with GAAP.

  • Prepare and post journal entries; oversee recurring and adjusting entries.

  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, including balance sheet reconciliations and variance analysis.

  • Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure consistent, accurate coding of financial information.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements (monthly, quarterly, annual) for internal leadership, the board, and external stakeholders.

  • Support audit preparation, including gathering schedules and documentation for external auditors.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and grantor regulations related to financial reporting.

Operational Accounting Leadership

  • Oversee AP, AR, bank reconciliations, cash management, and related accounting functions.

  • Strengthen internal controls, policies, and procedures to ensure safeguarding of assets and operational efficiency.

  • Collaborate with program, development, and administrative teams to support accurate financial tracking and reporting.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and enhance accounting systems and controls.

  • Assist with system enhancements or implementation projects as needed.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred but not required.

  • Strong general ledger experience with the ability to manage complex accounting environments.

  • Demonstrated experience leading month-end close with accuracy and timeliness.

  • Proven ability to prepare complete, accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP.

  • Prior experience in non-profit accounting strongly preferred.

  • Proficiency with accounting software and strong Excel skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-oriented environment.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.



Pay Details: $69.00 to $79.00 per hour
